Royal wrote, “We were greeted by a group of more than twenty friends who had hiked 5½ miles to meet us. A convivial picnic ensued, highlighted by some excellent champagne. This honest show of warmth, generosity and good fellowship that we received at the top made our ascent, which had been the most magnificent and complete adventure of our lives, doubly worthwhile.” (Sierra Club Bulletin, December 1960)

We had been seven days on the rock. This, our first El Cap climb, had changed our lives, forever. Like only the discovery of a whole new connection with Mother Earth and Father Sky could do. I felt we stepped off the last move of the climb straight into heaven. Discovering friends there confirmed it.

SUMMIT PARTY, Yvon Chouinard is on the left. Seated on tree are Art Gran, Chuck Pratt, and Joe Fitschen. Royal Robbins and Janie Taylor stand to the right of the El Capitan summit tree, following the second ascent of the Nose of El Capitan by Robbins, Pratt, Fitschen, and Frost, 7-13 September 1960.
